Hymns, Vol. 2

by Josiah Ruff

Released 2018
Released 2018
Hymns Vol. 2 is a collection of traditional hymns rearranged for a more modern, contemporary sound. It is what church sounds like in Josiah Ruff's head.
NOTES
I decided to do a hymns album because
1. I love the songs
2. The lyrics affirm my faith
3. I felt I could add a modern feel to classic songs that I've grown up singing.
As I rediscovered these songs I reconnected with the faith I had as I learned them in the past and married them to the sound that God has given me right now.

Hymns Volume 2 is what church sounds like in my head.

As you listen imagine that you are sitting in the third pew middle to the left side of the sanctuary right in front of the band as you're enveloped by the sounds of worship and praise, thanks giving and faith and victory.

These are some of the songs that have touched my life I pray that they will lift you up in your experience with God.

God Will
I composed this song when I was going through some financial difficulty. I didn't see a way out nor a good outcome all I had was this song, these lyrics that kept me going. "Be not dismayed whatever be tide, God will take care of you."
I had to believe and trust. This song was apart of that struggle that holding on of faith that grappling with God over His promise of support. Not in sorrow as usually depicted by this song but in adulation to God and in defiance of the enemy who is seeking to take away my peace. I kept saying in my mind God will, God will, God will.
As I repeated these words my faith began to hold on more firmly to His promise and peace and rest were the result. Though the struggle is not over my assurance of help took away my perplexity.
Let this song be a weapon against fear hold on by faith to these words by faith, God will take care of you!

I wanna thank Lamont Colter for lending his incredible skills to the keys, organ and piano. I can't forget Sam Terrett for his play on the bass. Thanx guys God bless you!

To God be the Glory
This song was a challenge for me because I'm not a very good guitar player and I had a specific sound I wanted that I couldn't do.
I imagined a stadium filled with worshippers and a guy like Chris Tomlin leading out with this huge sound behind him adding the support.
The strings and synths and piano and guitars all in harmony lifting this magnificent praise.
Then I woke up.
When I think of the salvation that God has given us through Jesus I think of this. Great praise, joy, jumping, clapping, laughing, singing.
You can loose yourself in this song. It's one of those you'll be singing after a good day at work or for a pick me up on the ride home. Reflect on Gods goodness and rejoice!

Andrew Lofthill on guitar and Sam Terrett on bass.

What a Friend
This song shows how much of a weirdo I am.
I just like it the funny metal sounds, the spacey guitar and the big drums all backing the message that you can go to God with whatever's on your heart and he will hear you.
My favorite part of the song is the bridge, the lyrics are: "can we find a friend so faithful?" The answer is obvious, no, but don't we try anyway?
Though everyone forsake you Jesus is the only friend who NEVER will. Ever.

A Wonderful Savior
My aunt Karen told me when I was about 12 years old that I should learn to play the sax; and I did. 1000 years later I've finally gotten around to recording something on the sax. Good thing it's not a super feature but it's a nice touch to this song.
Growing up this song was a boisterous round of pipe organ and congregation. I can still hear Earl Meyers on the organ with Harry Dulan leading out the audience with his super long fermatas.
Then the lyrics take me back to the actual story of Moses when he wanted to see Gods glory. God put him gently between a rock and told him not to peak as he went by so he wouldn't be consumed by the fire that is God. But God did something else for Moses knowing that he couldn't resist looking, God covered Moses with His hand so that the glory didn't obliterate him.
That's a savior for us! He's so concerned about us that even when he shows us his glory he hides a little because he knows we can't take it all in and live.
When you listen to this song think of a baby in a fathers arms protecting her from the elements.

Near to the Heart
Again I found myself needing reassurance that God hears me when I pray. This song spoke to me. I imagine that when I talk to God that I’m right up next to him, listening to his heartbeat just laying out my every care. There’s a saying that I have at the bottom of my iPhone email and it’s, “the Father Himself loves you”. Often we think of Jesus holding God back from destroying us but it’s actually Jesus who was sent to reveal to us how much God loves us. And every burden we might bear is dear to God and he longs to ease our pain and give us peace.

He Lives
What else can I say. We serve a God who is alive and is with us everyday! He’s even closer to us then He would have been if we had never ever sinned. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, Jesus lives in our hearts. What a wonderful revelation! This song was fun for me, I got to tap into my NeoSoul side. This is one of those Sunday picnic songs playing softball with the family and just having a good time in everyone’s company. At least that’s what I see in my head lol.

Thank you to my wife Sarah Ruff for playing the keys. Lamont Colter on organ, Sam Terrett on bass and Michael Nikou on guitars you all are the best!

Leaning
Who’s side are you leaning on? This one is just fun. I’ve always loved this song musically the way it was written but one day I sat down on the keys and played out these chords and started singing… “leaning, leaning”. This song is just another reminder to lean on Jesus for whatever you need. I had a blast creating this one, my hope is that you see my smile as you listen and feel each note, just love it like I do.

Thanks Sarah for helping me arrange the keys and piano (she played), Sam Terrett on bass, Monte Colter on drums, horns, and organ.

My Hope
Not a full song but a full message. Our only hope is in Jesus!

Be Like Jesus
This was the first song out of all of these tunes that I finished. I needed this reminder to continue to keep striving for the goal of being like Jesus. The song reminds me of my days in Huntsville, Alabama. I was singing in a group called Montaj with, Michael Simms, Steve Reid and Fred Bussey. I stole a lot of those vocal arranging techniques from them and applied it to this song. I hope they don’t come for royalties…

Turn Your Eyes
Thank you Sarah Ruff for this one. I started singing and she just put these strings and keys and all that niceness no this track and I just live it! Just take this one all in, let it wash over you but don’t blink.

Praise to the Lord
This is a praise song slowed way down and offered and both worship and praise. I wanted it to be really intimate so that the listener could focus on the goodness of God and what he provides for us. Health, strength, protection, provision, everything that we need! Reflect on the blessings you have now and thank Him. I found some less used lyrics for this tune and used them because I loved the message and reminder.

All Creatures
The bible says that everyone that breaths should give praise to God. I did it in a different way on this tune. Another on slowed way down so that we could focus on the words and the melody. If you know me, you’d know I’m a huge Fred Hammond fan. I think some of the spilled out in this tune there’s a surprise at the end. Maybe someone can write me and tell me what it is :-)… Looking forward to hearing what you think it is….

Thank you for listening and supporting this ministry with your attentiveness, prayers, likes, shares, comments and financial support! Without you I would not be able to reach as many people for God.
